For three games, Atlético Madrid has now had a Danish player who should bring a lot of excitement on both wings. His name is Jesper Gronkjaer and today, on the 18th of January 2005, our fanclub, the Peña Atlética Centuria Germana, has the once in our life time chance to meet Jesper Grønkjær and have the first interview since his departure for Spain.

PACG: Hello Mr. Grønkjær, it is an honour for us to meet you. Thank you very much for taking time to see us. You have been here in Madrid for about two weeks, would you like to tell us about your impressions about the capital of Spain?

J.G.: It’s been good, two weeks, three weeks so far, been a bit stressed of all the training, all the new faces to meet up with, a language I can’t speak… I have been enjoying my football, and of course there’s a lot of practical things I have to do and that makes it all a bit stressed, so... I’m looking forward to move out of the hotel.

PACG: So you don’t have a house at the moment?

J.G.: No, I haven’t.

PACG: You are a well travelled man, as we know, you’re born in Greenland, you have lived in Danmark, the Netherlands, England. How many languages do you understand and speak and is German among them?

J.G.: I understand German. I don’t speak it that well. I can fully understand you two when you speak in German. I can speak Danish obviously, I can speak English. I get by in Dutch, Norwegian, Swedish, it’s more or less the same, I can understand. I understand German – but Spanish is still… is still what I have to learn.

PACG: And so about your team mates: With whom do you talk to?

J.G.: There’s only a few players who really speak English, some players who get by, I am trying to use my arms, legs, toes, fingers… It all helps, and I think football, the language of football is international. It all helps that we are together a lot.

PACG: And in English, how would you describe yourself as a player?

J.G.: In English?

PACG: Yes, ‘cause we have been talking about languages…

J.G.: … Eeeeh…

PACG: You’re a wing player, and we think, in our opinion, you are the additional wing player we have needed for Atlético. In both the derbies in La Liga you played on the left, in the Copa game you played on the right, which is the position you prefer and why?

J.G.: Yes, originally I am a left winger, but a left winger who also plays on the right. Almost a few seasons for Chelsea especially, in the national team as well. I mean it must be a good strength to have that I can go to more positions. But if I have to decide I wanna be on the left.

PACG: And compared with your international experiences, how do you rate the Spanish league?

J.G.: As I said before, I have only been here for a few weeks…

PACG: Have you followed the league before?

J.G.: Not really followed. Maybe 10, 15 years ago, when Michael Laudrup was playing here for Barcelona, Real Madrid, he was probably the player everybody in Denmark… had as their idol. He was an ambassador for them.

PACG: What are your feelings when you enter the pitch of the Vicente Calderón wearing the red and white jersey?

J.G.: I have only done it once… and it was special. Obviously, it was my debut, it was my debut against Real Madrid, it was the first game of the year, we were all excited. It was after the winter break… But I was not nervous at all, I was really excited and what a game to start with! Just sadly, the score was not good for us.

PACG: Okay, so what do you expect from the team for this year, for this season, and for your next 2 years here?

J.G.: I wanna be a part of a football team which goes forward and plays attractive football, plays in Europe and that’s about also the aim of the club. But we have to wait until the end of the season. At the moment, we’re unlucky with the start of the new year. Hopefully, we’re gonna perform better, we gonna get a bit more of confidence and we’re gonna succeed in the League.

PACG: We bet that you will get 3 scorer points either through goals or assists including the Barcelona game. Will you take us up and even go higher with our bet? That you will shoot a goal or make an assist for a goal.

J.G.: Against Barcelona?

PACG: Yeah.

J.G.: Yeah, I hope so, but it’s not really important what I do, it’s important what the team does. And hopefully I’m gonna score and make a lot of assists. It’s important for the team to play well and if the team plays well, I’m gonna play well. And if this is gonna happen, we gonna be successful.

PACG: We got 10 short questions for you.

J.G.: Yepp.

PACG: Your favourite colour (only white is not a colour)?

J.G.: Probably, I have to say Red, White, Blue.

PACG: What car do you drive?

J.G.: None. I haven’t got a car.

PACG: Which animal impersonalizes you? Which animal describes you best?

J.G.: Haven’t got a clue.

PACG: What do you prefer, mountain or seaside?

J.G.: Seaside!

PACG: Your favourite sport except soccer?

J.G.: Handball.

PACG: Your favourite German football team?

J.G.: Bochum.

PACG: What was the first word you were able to say when you were a child?

J.G.: I’m not the one to ask, I can’t remember… It was probably mum, dad… eat.

PACG: What did you want to become when you were little?

J.G.: I guess most boys wanna be become fire fighter, policeman, yeah, I guess something like that. I don’t know.

PACG: Were there any nicknames you were called in your childhood?

J.G.: Not really nicknames. My surname probably, shortened.

PACG: Last but not least, is there anything you want to say to your German and international fans?

J.G.: Ah, yeah, keep supporting Atlético and hopefully we gonna see each other in Europe next season.

PACG:Mr. Grønkjær, thank you so much for the interview…

J.G.:Not a problem.

PACG: We thank you in the name of all the international Atlético fans around the world. We will publish this interview in Spanish, English, Danish and German on our Peña website and on Atletico Zone, an international website about Atlético. It was a pleasure to meet you and to talk to you in Lorca and here in Madrid. We wish you the best for your personal career and your future as a Rojiblanco. And we hope to see you next year in Germany with the Danish national team for the world cup 2006 and with Atlético in an European contest. If you need any help in Germany, please contact us.

Thank you very much!
